Reviews:

well-made but intellectually dishonest
Technically, this was a pretty well-made film, though awfully long and a bit boring in spots because of this. So, for technical reasons alone, I give the film as high a score as I do.

Okay folks, my rather conservative roots are sure gonna show through on this one. This is because Warren Beatty and crew produced a “homage” to a “great American”–a man who hated America and did his best to work for the spread of international communism. While an interesting story in some ways, the overly idealistic way that Reed is portrayed is, to me, rather nauseating. While America was not perfect (what nation is?), Reed and his mistress did everything they could to attack democracy–she ultimately being arrested as a spy. I think this film is probably one of the best examples when people complain that “Hollywood is out of touch”–by idealizing a person who doesn’t deserve idealizing (similar to what happened when Frida Kahlo was recently portrayed on film–a woman who slept with Trotsky and later excused his murder by Stalinists because it was “good for the cause”–Stalin, the same man who was responsible for the deaths of millions!).

To me, a film does not need to feature only “good” people. However, over-idealizing the bad is intellectually dishonest and excuses evil. Additionally, a film does not need to be pro-American (such as the great film “Z”) but fairness and honesty are of at least of SOME importance.

PS–Perhaps I am the only one who sees the irony of this picture. Warren Beatty, a very rich guy who made his money in American films, promoting communism!! I guess it’s easy for a rich guy in a democratic society to complain–I wonder if poor guys in the old Soviet Union had this same opportunity?!

PPS–this dishonest film that bored most viewers and lost millions was adored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (the Oscar people) with lots of awards and nominations. This doesn’t exactly surprise me but says a lot about these ultra-pampered fools. A couple reviewers called the making of this film “brave”. Why brave? Hollywood eats up this sort of stuff.
