Ignore the ridiculous low ratings
I had to edit my original review because I ended up seeing it 3 times in the theater. It was even more powerful and intense the 2nd time. I picked up on things I missed before. So, I highly recommend seeing it at least twice.

Believer or not, this movie was very well done with a pretty drastic approach to the Christian genre. It’s coming from the perspective of the “ones below.” Demons. Hell. Satan. It reveals the harsh reality of spiritual warfare that goes on everyday. This movie is mind-blowing at times.

People are giving low ratings just because it’s a “Christian” movie. (Annoying). Nothing is being shoved down your throat, the gospel is not preached, and the name “Jesus” isn’t even used once in the film. The psychiatrist is an atheist. This is all about perspective. You can be a non-Believer and still enjoy this intense, thought provoking film. No one is forcing you to become a Christian.

(FYI – It’s not scary at all. I’m not sure why it’s rated R. I let my 11, 12 & 14 year old see it).

I have to give a huge shout out to Sean Patrick Flanery. His performance was top notch, could not have been better. You saw pure evil in this being, then in the next second, my heart broke for him. A MUST SEE FOR ALL!!!!!!

If “The Asylum” made a religious propaganda film
Nefarious tricks you with a slick trailer into thinking you’re going to watch an intriguing mystery thriller about a death row inmate who may or may not be crazy or possessed. It’s up to a psychologist who doesn’t believe in the supernatural to determine if he is sane enough for exectution. But could there perhaps be something more going on? Could a powerful evil be at work here?

It’s one of those two guys in a room films. I generally hate this format, since its very nature is uncinematic. It rarely worked (Death and the Maiden), and is usually a attempt to make money with a small by false marketing it as either artsy or a psychological thriller, when in reality it’s just cheap.

The marketing promised this to be the Exorcist on Death row. What you get, is a 10 minute thriller setup and then an 80 minute sermon about Christianity which regurgitates all the tired old talking points about how the conditions on earth are too improbable to be random. The improbability of life has been explained with the anthropic principle. The whole improbability argument has yet to convert anyone with an IQ over 80.

The film is propaganda. There’s something fundamentally dishonest about charging money for what you claim is art, but it actually propaganda instead. It’s ugly and deceptive, and it takes the audience for a fool, which we’re not. It wastes our time and lies to us about what we’re paying for.

I dislike it here as much as I dislike the woke circle jerking on the other side of the aisle (anything Disney these days) with it’s white man bad or anti male BS.

If I want propaganda (from either side), I’ll put on the news. And I also expect it to be free.

Now, from an artistic and technical point this film is not all bad. The initial setup is legitimately interesting. Sean Patrick Flannery gives a good performance (the other lead not so much), and at least the lighting and camera work are ok. At least someone cared enough this time to properly light the scene, which is more than can be said for some of the crap Marvel has put out.

One thing to watch out for: I don’t expect Sean Patrick Flannery to get much work after this. He’ll probably end up going the Kevin Sorbo route. If Hollywood hadn’t cast him aside yet, they will now for sure. Unfair? Yes. In this regard, I’m actually happy that the other teams are building their own entertainment industry now. From Shapiro and his throwback low budget thrillers to religious films. More variety and less monopoly for the big hollywood studios is a good thing. But let’s be honest about what you’re selling. Don’t market a church sermon as a horror thriller. Eventually, someone’s going to troll you back and market something as a Christian film, only to sneak in some subliminal satanic or pornographic stuff.
