Six years after the fire, Cuevas meets Valerie Valleja former wife of one of Pedro’s cousins, who was also at the party. She has a six-year-old girl with her, named Aaliyah. Decent entry into the movie-of-the-week genre. most surprising, though, was the number of wretched “Spanish” accents on display. At times it sounds like bad “speedy Gonzalez” outtakes, with overemphasized trilled Rs, Spanglish dialog that sounds like they threw in a Spanish word every three or four words to remind folks the characters are Latinas, and such. Most of the actors here can usually be relied upon to turn in good work, but it seems they were either working for the check or ultimately didn’t much care. One would think with all the Spanish surnames involved, someone would’ve stepped up and said, “We sound ridiculous,” but that doesn’t appear to have happened.
