Mixed Bag, OK if you are into action b-movies
Having followed the progress of Deep Gold (the film shot for almost 3 years), the result is kind of a mixed bag. Overall, I liked the action scenes, and the story is relatively OK (for an action/b-movie). The acting of villain Michael Gleissner is surprisingly good (given that he is the director), so is the acting of Jaymee Ong and Laury Prudent (I was not sold on the lead, Bebe Pham). The story drags on in the beginning, but I liked the comic relief that the “harbor master” (Kersten Hui) provided. The underwater action scenes provided great action, but they were too dark and often lacked details. The cinematography did not seem to have consistency throughout the film (it seems like over the long shooting time, several cinematographers worked on the film).
The closing titles are interrupted with an “interview with the mayor”, summarizing what has happened … totally unnecessary and annoying.
