Funnier film than other “comedies”
The only burning desire that led me to see this in the theaters was to support the conservative cause. I thought it looked funny from the trailers but frankly, if it didn’t have the underlying theme, I may have waited to see it on DVD.And then a funny thing happened in the theater that hasn’t happened in recent comedy releases: I laughed a lot. I don’t remember laughing out loud once during such drivel as “Black Sheep” (ironically starring Kevin Farley’s brother), “Meet the Fockers”, “Goldmember”, or “Shrek 2” to name a few. This film has more laughs than all of them combined, and more. The amazing thing is–as I have mentioned in previous reviews–the latter 3 films made significantly more money than their predecessors, so there is not a positive correlation between a film’s quality and how much the film makes. Unfortunately, Hollywood–and our society in general–only gauge success by the “take.” That being said, this film was an unqualified success in my mind.
It’s funny how the Hollywood left still takes shots at Sen. Joe McCarthy for “Red-baiting” during the 1950’s (see “Quiz Show” et al.) and about the Hollywood blacklist (“Guilty by Suspicion” et al). They constantly rant about “McCarthyism” which they have succeeded in equating it with a curse word. They have done the same thing to the term “swift-boating”. So to the ignorant, these 2 terms are tantamount to acts of evil. The fact is that McCarthy and the Swift-boat Vets for Truth uncovered Communists in our government (Alger Hiss) and the real truth of what John Kerry did (or didn’t do in Vietnam) respectively.
The reason why I mentioned this is because the brave actors in this film may face a blacklist of their own, while Hollywood leftists continue to deify the Communist blacklisted writers of the 50’s and the traitors like Hiss who were ferreted from our government.
Addendum: The untimely death of Ron Silver prompted me to add an addendum. I read an article about this brave man who, after he spoke at the 2004 Republican National Convention in defense of George Bush and the War on Terrorism, stated that his phone stopped ringing about potential film roles. Blacklist indeed.
