A couple of episodes were slow, but some of them were good, and the season finale was epic. And I’m glad it has been renewed for a second series.
A well made, cinematic and brilliant acting, especially by James Bryhan as the Archivist and his interaction with Freddy Karter.
I would love to see what happens next with the Archivist, considering his archives had been broken into and if , like many of the other characters, had something special about him.
Overall, a brilliant script, fantastic acting and a series that most certainly deserves all the awards heading its way..
A Good Watch With Potential
Shadow and Bone is a good watch. It’ll keep you entertained and the actors and actresses did a good job. The script was sometimes a bit dull, as was some of the CGI and the costumes. But for me, the show kinda fell apart the same way most fantasy Netflix shows do: pace.
I would have loved a bit more world and character building. With a slower pace this would have been possible. The way they did it was neither a super fast action pace to keep you at the edge of your seat, nor was it a slowly building story where you could get invested into all the characters.
Also most characters that appeared really weren’t that relevant to the plot. Especially the Crows and Nina/Matthias. They were entertaining but there was so much else going on, that these ‘fillers’ wouldn’t have been needed. The Crows did bring a lot of humor into the show and I loved the casting there, but still, I felt like it would have been better to hold their storylines back for the first season and only explore the world we find ourselves in and properly develop the three main characters of Alina, Mal and the Darkling.
I think if we’d have gotten more time with the characters, the actors/actresses could have really showed all their potential and the world could have been much richer. This would have meant to put a bigger part of the plot into the following seasons, but I would’ve been fine with that. I’m aware that that might not be everyones cup of tea, but I’m a sucker for character study and deep and emotional storylines.
The show has potential and as I mentioned earlier, it is very enjoyable. Just don’t imagine a second GoT (earlier seasons) or Harry Potter. For me, Shadow and Bone is really more a stand alone new fantasy that will certainly mostly attract a younger audience but is binge worthy for all ages.
Shadow and Bone(2021-)
The show uses a multiple Points -of -View narrative, with the primary storyline involving an orphaned girl Alina (A wonderful Jessie Mei Lie who especially shines) coming to terms with her newfound powers as a Grisha (witch). In a world where dark forces have taken over, a young mapmaker, Alina Starkov, accidentally discovers that she has the power to change the fate of the war. She is the only one who has the power to summon light and this will make her play a key role in this war.
I really enjoy a dose of STEAMPUNK and high fantasy . This Netflix series is chalked full of both with very high production value. Shadow and Bone has both a grand vision and, seemingly, the blockbuster budget needed to pull it off. In other words, if you like fantasy, then do check out Shadow and Bone. And if you’re not really into fantasy, then I would still recommend that you give it a shot. It is a gorgeous production that has lots of very dark and sinister moments. The world-building is very grand and impressive. Soul-stirring music, and eye-catching CGI. The plot is riveting and the characters have been fleshed out as superbly as they have been acted.
Shadow and Bone is a very popular young adult fantasy series from author Leigh Bardugo. Her debut novel, Shadow & Bone, is the first book in the Grisha . Do Shadow and Bone and Tsarpunk belong anywhere along the Steampunk spectrum? I found this article talking with Shadow and Bone author Leigh Bardugo.
Today we welcome Leigh Barduo who’s going to tell us all about Tsarpunk, because Tsarpunk is awesome.
You said Tsarpunk started out with tongue firmly in cheek. But what’s the verdict now? Do you think of Shadow and Bone as High Fantasy, Steampunk, or something else?
Hell if I know. To be considered a real sub-sub-genre, I think Tsarpunk wouldn’t just be about Russian influence as window-dressing but also about incorporating a distinctly different worldview and spirit. I hope the Grisha Trilogy does that, but I’m not going to be the one to claim it. If the series shares the revolutionary and DIY sensibilities of punk, then that makes me happy. If I get to rub up against the innovation and ingenuity of Steampunk, I’m honored by the association. If Shadow and Bone stays firmly grounded in High Fantasy, I’m good with that, too. As long as no one calls it smooth jazz, we’ll be just fine.
