There’s Stick, a surfer headed for Vietnam, Pirate, who wants to discover America along Route 66, and Michael, whose political activism may destroy his Harvard-bound future. Little do any of them realize that their final carefree days will also mark the end of their – and all of America’s – innocence..
Plot: It’s the summer of 1965, and the members of the graduating class of upscale Westwood High are eager to reinvent themselves. Valedictorian Mary Beth wants to attend a liberal university. Surfer bum Stick plans to enlist to fight in Vietnam. Calvin lives in the poor Watts section of Los Angeles, which is slowly erupting in violence. As the summer nights grow long, they’ll all be forced to make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives.

An astute period piece….
It certainly would help if you, (as I was) a teenager during the mid to late 60’s to enjoy this movie. The writer and director skillfully encapsulated all the issues of the time into a two hour movie that chronicled one graduation day/eve in 1965. All the emotions, political troubles, moral issues, family belief structures and youthful life styles and were portrayed through the friendship of these few individuals. This movie was one of the most nostalgic films I have ever watched.

Wish more people could see this
Absolutely love this film. It is now, sadly, very hard to get a copy of to watch. Much better coming of age high school movie than the usual culprits (American Graffiti etc). The soundtrack is ace and really, really good acting from some young stars who have gone on to bigger projects. Please seek this title out.
