To keep it brief, this movie lives in my head rent free. I truely enjoyed everything about this unique movie and I just cant speak highly enough about it. The way it’s written was absolutely amazing, and to put something like this together is just special and unique. I can’t thank the directors, writers, co-stars and everyone involved to put together this somewhat of a tribute movie, and do it so well. Easily one of favourite movies of the year, and probably one of favourite of recent times.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a hilarious meta ride filled with goofy charm and outrageous comedy. Nic Cage made this movie possible and wonderful – both because the movie is a parody of his career and because he was willing to be a good sport and play an exaggerated crazier version of himself. The story bears some similarities to Hot Fuzz as characters unknowingly discuss upcoming plot points that come later in the film. The whole thing is bonkers, entertaining, good-hearted, and silly. Pedro Pascal expands his acting range by playing an obsessed Nic Cage fan that boosts the comedy further by matching Cage’s manic craze with sincere adoration and enthusiasm. As a Nic Cage fan, I laughed out loud repeatedly. As an action-comedy fan, it’s a pretty funny and enjoyable way to spend an hour.

What a cool idea with the perfect actor
To give you insight into my relationship with Nicolas Cage, I will quote the end of my review for his movie Jiu Jitsu, which I gave 1 star:

“This is just a straight-garbage movie. Damn you Nick Cage!

… I wonder what movie of his I’ll watch next.”

I’ve been a fan of his for so long. I think he’s very talented and has a certain crazy appeal that you don’t see from other actors. And I keep watching most of his movies even as they plummet in quality and rarely make it to cinemas. He still makes them entertaining, even if they are awful. This is a huge contrast to other former A-list actors who have gone down the same path but with unwatchable movies. Like fellow Face/Off star John Travolta or Bruce Willis (we will miss you!).

So when they decide to make a movie that’s essentially all about Nick Cage, of course I’m 100% in. And I have to say, this is his best movie in years. It’s levels above the quality of his recent direct-to-video movies and is definitely cinema-worthy.

I laughed a lot. A couple parts had me crying from laughter. And when I wasn’t laughing I was generally amused. It felt so refreshing to laugh with his movie rather than at it. And with the lack of comedy movies lately, this came at a perfect time.

Other than the comedy, this is a mostly well-made movie with a story and characters that kept me invested. I love the meta aspect. Nick Cage’s performance in this role is perfect. It has a good supporting cast with the standout being Pedro Pascal. He’s so likeable and has great chemistry with Nick Cage. Their relationship drives the movie. Pedro Pascal is a star.

I had a great time with this movie. I think most will enjoy it, but the ones who will appreciate it the most are the fans who are familiar with his work. (1 viewing, early screening 4/13/2022)

I didn’t know if I should count Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse since his role is so small, but it would be behind Matchstick Men.

Surprisingly, this film featured a really nice little romance as well as some comedy.
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is a very good Nicholas Cage film which I recommend you try as well. It’s very clever and fun.

In this movie, Cage plays a version of himself. This Nicholas Cage made all the movies we are familiar with, but also has a fictionalized and funny life outside films. In this case, Cage has practically no life outside of his work, and it seriously impairs his relationship with his daughter and ex-wife.

This Cage is practically broke and because of this, he accepts a strange offer…to travel to Majorca to attend a man’s birthday party for $1,000,000! While he’s loathe to do it, he is desperate for money and something strange happens soon after he arrives…he finds an unexpected chemistry between himself and Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal)…so much that I really thought they made a cute couple. But there is a serious unforeseen problem…Javi is reportedly an evil arms merchant who has added kidnapping to his infamy…and the CIA recruit Cage to work for them!! There’s much more to it than this…see the film to see what’s REALLY happening and to see what happens next.

It’s odd, but the relationship between Cage and Gutierez shows more relationship-building and romance that you see in most romance films!! But the filmmakers seem to have realized this and inserted a couple poorly integrated relationships for BOTH men so as to preclude a gay romance. It’s a shame, as neither woman seemed to fit into the plot…especially Javi’s ‘woman’. Despite this shortcoming, the film really is fun and clever…and you should give it a try. I applaud Cage for such a brave film and also loved him and Pascal in this nice feel-good movie.
