Synopsis

Watch: The Power of the Dog 2021 123movies, Full Movie Online – Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling. All of Phil’s romance, power and fragility is trapped in the past and in the land: He can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. He is a cowboy as raw as his hides. The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant on their way to market, the brothers meet Rose, the widowed proprietress, and her impressionable son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly he drives them both to tears, revelling in their hurt and rousing his fellow cowhands to laughter – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose then returns to marry her. As Phil swings between fury and cunning, his taunting of Rose takes an eerie form – he hovers at the edges of her vision, whistling a tune she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more overt, amplified by the cheering of Phil’s cowhand disciples. Then Phil appears to take the boy under his wing. Is this latest gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot twisting further into menace?.
Plot: A domineering but charismatic rancher wages a war of intimidation on his brother’s new wife and her teen son, until long-hidden secrets come to light.

**Full Explanation and Analysis at Spotamovie.com – The Story** – The Power of the Dog, a book written by Thomas Savage in 1967, inspires the film. It’s not your typical western. No guns are involved, but something more complex and psychological. Located in Montana in 1925, two wealthy and different brothers, George and Phil, own a ranch.Their lives change when they meet Rose, a widow, mum to Peter, a delicate but intelligent guy. Different personalities and interests generate a hostile environment for all of our characters. After the chaos, the dreamed balance may rise again, but, first, the story will become intense, engaging and exhausting. What will happen between them? Why George and Phil are different? And what is The Power of the Dog? It’s a complex film, full of symbolism, metaphors and psychology. It’s well-directed, excellently performed by the whole cast. And it’s not a case that, as we mentioned above, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are in nominations as best actors at the Golden Globe 2022. – **Analysis **here https://www.spotamovie.com/the-power-of-the-dog-explanation-and-review-2021-movie/

Jane Campion’s direction is top-notch, beautifully shot by Ari Wegner, and Johnny Greenwood’s score fits like a soft leather glove. But that script – oh so Hollywood and oh so boring!! I want my 127 minutes back.

The Power of the Dog
5/10 – maybe I just missed something but this western awards darling had literally nothing of interest happen in it’s over 2 hour runtime and the acting does not reach the heights of other performances this year.

Raw Realism – “Power of the Dog” Review
I did not expect the accent… It somehow fit so perfectly well on Benedict Cumberbatch. Then again the actor made it fit well for Phil Burbank, the character he played in “The Power of the Dog” for Netflix.

The story focuses on Rancher Phil Burbank’s life. Benedict lent him an aura of fearful casual-cruelty. He came across as someone we have all known in our lives at some point growing up. This was genius, in a way, taking an ‘obvious’ character like Phil and making him relatable.

His relationship with his brother George Burbank (played by Jesse Plemons) and his (later) wife Rose (played by Kirsten Dunst) was unnerving, though not all that complicated. It was interesting to watch as it played out. Jesse and Kirsten gave good performances.

Rose’s son Peter (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) gave a subtly bold performance in Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog”. He was more than relatable, seeing as how so many of us have experienced being bullied or misunderstood, underestimated even.

Phil’s character-transition from a work-focused speak-your-heart-out don’t-care-what-you-think-of-me man to someone learning to appreciate the nuances of gradually falling for his own brother’s step-son (!), all the while trying to hide it under a veneer of trolling and judging, was nothing less than masterful. The character became memorable in large part thanks to Cumberbatch’s acting aplomb and skill.

I was wondering why there was a distinct literary flavour to the scenes until I learned this movie was based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. Jane Campion did good work adapting it and an even better job directing.

Much was left to interpretation, and in all the right ways. The movie makes you ‘become’ part of its ‘simple everyday’ narrative. My take on the ending was that Peter, given his tendency to study dead things, wore gloves and handled a cow corpse that was intentionally discarded in the hills, because it was a potential carrier of Anthrax. It was how things were done back then, apparently.

Peter wore those gloves even during his interactions with Phil in the stable. Nothing ‘untoward’ happened between the two of them, in fact it is still up for debate whether Peter had any same-sex feelings at all despite being somewhat effeminately inclined. Phil, on the other hand, might have been drawn to other ‘types’ or perhaps did have some unknown fling with the boy. This very situation harkens back to Phil’s ‘relationship’ with his own mentor who’d first taught him to ride a horse. Phil was Peter’s age at that time, providing an interesting clue as to whether history was repeating itself in some way.

That Peter wore those (most probably) Anthrax-coated gloves when he brought the raw hide strips to Phil for braiding, and with Phil at that time still having an unhealed wound on his hand from before, all added up to the question of whether Peter knowingly murdered Phil in an indirect and unprovable way. Phil Burbank fell ill the very next day and perished a while after being taken to the doctor.

The movie concluded with Peter holding the loop of braided rope. He’s seen wearing his gloves, the same gloves he’d used when he rode up to the Anthrax-infected bovine thrown a ways off in the hills. Peter slipped the rope under his bed and went to catch sight of someone driving over to the house. Somewhere near the beginning of the movie, the boy narrated the importance of him taking care of his mother in the absence of his father, who’d committed suicide.

Peter, if he did indeed kill Phil the way he did, was merely getting rid of a man who was constantly against everything his mother and he essentially were – a suicide widow seeking a second chance at life with George Burbank, and her only son who was jeered at by Phil and his men for being a ‘sissy’. In killing Phil, Peter became the silent ‘man’ of the ranch, and gave back dignity and control to George who was seen kissing Rose (Peter’s mother) upon their return from the funeral.

On a related note, there’s a biblical source to the movie’s title. You’ll find it in the ‘Psalm of the Cross’ (Psalm 22:20) and it goes like this: “But You, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of wild dogs. Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns of the wild oxen You have answered me!” It is a yesteryear reference to wicked people, particularly in association with some types of dogs that were considered ‘unclean’. You’ll find a clever discourse written by H. J. Wilmot Buxton on Bible Hub (the website) about the subtext behind the phrase ‘Power of the Dog’.

With Jane Campion directing and Ari Wegner on cinematography, this movie apparently found its perfect set of ‘magic ingredients’ to drag you into a period-drama that felt raw and real. Jonny Greenwood’s music turned out to be the perfect ‘accompaniment’ to this American-Southern ‘cinema-wine’.

“Power of the Dog” on Netflix was equal parts tricky, subtextual, interpretative, symbolic, and deep.
