Reviews:

You can cheat your sisters, but you cannot cheat yourself or God.
Eight Oscar nomination, five Golden Globe nominations, and five BAFTA nominations, with a win for Audrey Hepburn for Best British Actress indicates that this was one of the best films of 1959. Unfortunately, it had to go up against Ben Hur for most awards. That doesn’t take a bit from it’s excellence and entertainment value.

This is an utterly fascinating story of a young nun (Audrey Hepburn), and a non-believing doctor (Peter Finch). Sister Luke (Hepburn) is constantly challenged in sticking to her vows, especially the one of obedience.

She chaffed at the rules that did not leave room for common sense. Is it better to strictly obey or to do more good in disobedience? It is a question asked over and over.

Things become more difficult as WWII starts. Now, the rules must be set aside to help the war effort. Eventually, the conflict between the rules and her need for independence is resolved.

Hepburn was fantastic, as was Finch. Well worth seeing.

Wonderful film about a struggle of conscience
This is my favourite movie of all time. It was responsible on first seeing it in 1967 for my wanting to be a nun for about three weeks! I can virtually recite the script. It also follows the book extremely accurately – some incidents are removed to save time but little is altered, as is regrettably common when novels make it onto the big screen.

Audrey Hepburn is wonderful, expressing a huge range of emotions with only a slight change of facial expression, Peter Finch highly convincing as the Surgeon in the Congo, and the supporting cast well-chosen. Some of the performances are little gems in their own right. Sister Luke is a believable person from beginning to end and her anguish over the Nazi invasion of her homeland and her inability to square her hatred of them with her vows and her religious beliefs is entirely convincing.

Visually it is extremely rewarding. For example, the contrast between the bleak Belgian convent with its bare stone walls and black clad sisters, and the lush Congo. It also tries to deal with some of the issues raised by the colonisation of Africa by European countries. This of course is not within its scope and the focus soon returns to sister Luke and her struggles to square her need to help people with obedience to her vows.
