A creditable effort
There is more to this movie than meets the eye. If you’re looking for groundbreaking originality or easy comedy, you’ll be disappointed. But for an entertaining 90 minutes, this is just fine.

The cinematography is careful and precise. The sex scenes, which one comment decries as gratuitous, are anything but – every gesture contributes to the development of the characters.

Yes, some of the main characters are not exactly lovable human beings. But the movie makes an honest effort at showing their interactions in an honest light, without being sensationalistic (at least not for early 21st century urban standards). And there are many very amusing moments.

Thirty is the new twenty. They say that right near the start of the film. We follow a group of twenty somethings in new york city as they grow up. Or they don’t. A mixed group of gay and straight friends, as one couple (Andrew and Julie) decides to tie the knot. The star here seems to be Ryan Locke as the groom “Andrew”. Some awkwardness as we are introduced to everyone. Some millennial, fast-paced city living which is foreign to most of us. Lots of straight sex going on. Very confusing… we’re not sure just how everyone is related, and some of these people are real jerks. it’s a little frustrating. Forty-five minutes in, and we still don’t really care about any of the characters. Maybe we care about Tony (Andrew Lin). He actually has a story line, principles, and seems to be a nice guy. The plot line here seems to point out the danger of going into business with your friends. Or maybe it’s something else. Just a month in the life of a group of friends. Written and directed by Chris Johnson. Pretty good story, but there’s a lot going on here. Wanted more character development, but there wasn’t really time. Climactic ending, but totally predictable. It all ties together towards the end. This actually would have made a good TV series, where they would have had time to build some character development and make us care about the characters more.
