Suburbia vs. the prostitute
“The Naked Kiss” features Constance Towers as a prostitute on the run who is attempting to assimilate in suburbia after escaping from her pimp. The small town she settles in, called Grantville, seems picturesque, and the people, charming. But the longer she spends in the town, its cleanness comes to efface itself, revealing a darker substructure.

Hailed as a masterpiece and simultaneously discredited as B-movie trash, “The Naked Kiss” seems to provoke divisive reactions from its audience, and it truly seems to be a classic “love it or hate it” piece of filmmaking. Fuller’s script explores the “dark side of suburbia” trope before the trope even existed; it would appear that the film inspired the likes of “Blue Velvet,” contrasting images of the pristine with an ugliness festering beneath the surface, though it’s impossible to say for sure.

The narrative follows Towers’ Kelly as she wanders through life in her newly adopted town, attempting to find the goodness in the world that has evaded her. She takes a job working with handicapped children, and even begins dating—but it’s not long before these idealized, wholesome endeavors begin to come apart at the seams. The cinematography here is fantastic, and at times the film seems to aesthetically evoke “Carnival of Souls” (1963), but replacing its horror elements with those of neo-noir. The film is full of jump cuts, abrupt fade-ins and fade-outs, and bizarre editing choices, which may or may not be a direct result of the low production budget. In any case, the choppiness manages to melt into the film and become part of its aesthetic, disappearing before the eyes as it is subsumed by the visual narrative.

Towers, who would go on to be a Broadway star directly after this film (and later earn recognition from mainstream soap opera fans for her long-running villainous turn on “General Hospital”) turns in a performance that is both crazed and understated, ranging from the maniacal skinheaded opening scene to poignant, quiet moments as she evokes both disappointment and hopelessness. Supporting performances from Michael Dante as her boyfriend hiding a dark secret, and Virginia Grey as a seedy brothel madam, are both colorful and twisted. The film’s dark conclusion is somber but mildly hopeful as she faces the aftermath of a crime.

“The Naked Kiss” is a film full of dichotomies: the suburban and the urban; insanity and stability; truth and lies; love and sex; man and woman; life and death—and that is precisely what Fuller plays with to full effect throughout. Towers’ character strives for normalcy, attempting to float somewhere in the middle, but is dragged down into the pits of hell time and again. In that regard, Fuller captures a quietly eerie tedium. No matter where she goes, darkness seems to follow, and in the end, all she has is herself. 9/10.
