Mann-Stewart Combo Does It Again!
Director Anthony Mann and actor James Stewart combined to make several westerns and they were all very good. Make that “excellent.” This is one of them and it gets high marks for an involving story.

It also features what I call “realistic dialog,” along with interesting characters and a film noir feel to it. That’s no surprise since Mann directed a few film noirs. Along that noir theme, be warned this is not an upbeat story, a feel-good Jimmy Stewart film that most people remember him by. In here, he’s a vengeful guy here (but, yeah, still a good man at heart). Donald Crisp also demonstrates an overt double-edged sword, so to speak, being a very gruff but fair land owner.

Some of the best lines in the movie are delivered by Ailine MacMahon, an older woman friend who helps Stewart. Cathy O’Donnell plays the female romantic lead but is a bit on the bland side, frankly.

Good story…..solid western…..deserves to be better known. Buy the DVD. It”s cheap. You won’t be sorry.

Mildly entertaining western compromised by plot contrivance and lack of solid character motivations
The last collaboration between director Anthony Mann and iconic screen star Jimmy Stewart before their unfortunate falling out, The Man from Laramie is a robust, entertaining “spectacle” in technicolor loaded with gobs of plot contrivance. You will be entertained if you’re willing to suspend your disbelief-that’s the bottom line.

Stewart plays Will Lockhart who we find out much later is an officer in the US Cavalry. His younger brother who was also in the army was killed by Apache Indians on the outskirts of the massive Barb Ranch near a town called Coronado, after someone sold repeating rifles to the Apaches. Will is determined to find out who this person is since he blames the unidentified culprit for his brother’s death.

As the plot moves along, Will hardly plays a man working surreptitiously to uncover the truth as to who sold the rifles. Rather he gets into all kinds of altercations, primarily with the denizens of the Barb Ranch owned by the patriarch Alec Waggomon (Donald Crisp) and rather unbelievably fails to maintain a low profile.

Not all of the altercations Will gets into are of his own making. The first big encounter is instigated by Alec’s hothead son Dave (Alex Nicol) who is just a little bit of an over the top character to be believed. Dave burns Will’s wagon train and shoots his mules dead after claiming that Will and his hired help were trespassing on the Barb Ranch, stealing salt. Earlier Alec’s niece Barbara (Cathy O’Donnell), owner of the general store in town, advised Will that the salt was free for the taking.

Back in town, Will tackles Dave and gets the best of him in a fistfight. Alec’s long-term assistant Vic (Arthur Kennedy) jumps in on Alec’s orders to defend his son at all costs (despite Alec knowing what a troublemaker and hothead his son really is).

The pacing of the story slows down when the town drunk tries to stab Will to death. He turns up dead and Will is arrested. A local rancher Kate Canady (Aline McMahon) bails Will out but she has an ulterior motive: she wants Will to work managing her ranch. It is one of the few ranches left that hasn’t been gobbled up by the Waggomon’s. But she still pines away for Alec since she had gone out with him years earlier.

Does it make a lot of sense that Will goes ahead (by himself) to tend to Kate’s herd of cattle even though he knows Dave is looking to gun him down? Not really. As it turns out Dave finally does try to shoot Will who ends up shooting him in the hand. Will however is captured by David and his men and the crazed and vengeful rancher’s son reciprocates by shooting Will point blank also in the hand while being restrained by the Barb Ranch men.

A good part of the narrative revolves around Alec’s blind devotion to his son and love-hate relationship with Vic who’s been a devoted worker for him for years. The problem with the script is that Vic is treated very sympathetically in the beginning of the film but later he inexplicably becomes the villain of the piece.

We’re led to believe it was Dave who arranged to sell the repeating rifles to the Apaches but Vic ends up doubling down after killing Dave and then deciding to sell the rest of the rifles. He also has an argument with Alec and fails to assist him after he falls off his horse and off a cliff.

I’m not sure why the film scenarists decided to turn Vic into the fall guy here but he appears to receive a rather undeserved comeuppance at the hands of the Apaches who murder him after Will disposes of rifles loaded on a wagon, off a cliff (it wasn’t very convincing that the rifles all were lost after the wagon burst into flames). Will has an opportunity to kill Vic after discovering that he was mainly responsible for selling the rifles, but his conscience gets the better of him.

Niece Barbara is sort of left hanging in the lurch after being engaged to Vic but then gradually expresses an interest in Will. Perhaps she’ll be seeking Will out back in Laramie where he is headed at film’s end. The mean-spirited Alec goes blind but given his now vulnerable position in life realizes that Kate has always been there for him.

The Man from Laramie is mildly entertaining with some excellent cinematography all in technicolor. Stewart performs his anti-hero role here nicely but not all of the contrived plot will keep you happy.
