There’s a difference between a book and a screenplay, Ms. Rand
When I was young, I got caught up in the Randian thing, seeing objectivism as the way to go. I mean, how about a philosophy where you are answerable to no one but yourself, and can be as selfish as you wish. You can be high and mighty, and if things don’t go right, you can blame the society and the government for the fact that they don’t follow your dictates. There is nothing wrong with pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps, but most of my fellow objectivists came to realize, those absolutes they whined about fell apart when their own emotions and attachments for others took their place. Life is just more complex than Rand says it is and her followers are often a little like those Trekkies that turn some pretty solid advice into a secular religion (ala scientology). Now, my complaints aside. This is a really bad movie. The script is horrible. The Randian ego wouldn’t let the screenplay be written by someone who knew how to write a screenplay. Then there is the endless preaching. Long sentences; stilted dialogue; unbelievable characters. Whiney people who have to have it just so or it should be dynamited. I’ve always like Gary Cooper. I thought he had died when his corpse showed up in this film. It’s just that the book isn’t rally a novel; it’s a work of philosophy like a platonic dialogue. The book’s characters are at best examples of the philosopher’s premises. When you transfer this stilted dialogue to the screen, you see what happens. Sorry, my old friends. Get a life.
