I wish it felt more justified in being feature-length and not just a season finale plot. But still: very entertaining! The vocal performances are fun (H. Jon Benjamin, my beloved), the jokes hit pretty well, and it’s very watchable. Guess I need to finally check out the show!
“Bob” and “Linda” are facing ruin. Their burger restaurant isn’t paying it’s way and when the bank manager gives them a week to repay their business loan, or lose all their kitchen equipment – things look bleak! Not so bleak as they look the next morning after a great sink hole has appeared outside of their restaurant. Luckily, though, in best “Passport to Pimlico” (1949) tradition, their daughter “Louise” is mucking about near the hole and falls in. Treasure? No, not quite – a skeleton which turns out to be the body of a long lost “Carnie”, and a murdered one at that. A quick police investigation leads to the arrest of their landlord and local grandee “Fischoeder” on a murder charge. Maybe because “Louise” always sports a pink bunny-eared hat, but she smells a rat, and together with her siblings “Tina” and “Gene” sets off to get to the truth before the family loses it’s livelihood. Perhaps I just didn’t get the memo, but this is not very good. It is a sort of “Scooby Do” meets a “Carry On” affair, that relies for the most part on some pretty infantile humour, some curiously drawn – chinless – animations and the odd song. Certainly, the dialogue is quickly paced but it’s hardly ever funny, and I really struggled to remain engaged after about twenty minutes. Perhaps I need my humour to be a little more sophisticated, less puerile and maybe not so prone to stereotype. Sorry – this just wasn’t for me.
Meets expectations
The Bob’s Burgers Movie meets expectations. It’s funny, purposeful, and developed enough to maintain investment. Fundamentally, it’s a murder mystery, but also intertwines Bob’s money issues (which is the emotional force). Plus, Louise is intrinsically motivated to prove her bravery, making her the main protagonist and giving her the clearest arc. Bob’s Burgers doesn’t have the tightest crafted humor, but these dynamic characters help it connect emotionally. The film is still lighthearted and silly (with skilled setup and payoff), but it peppers in enough drama to create substance. Thus, Bob’s Burgers succeeds because it delivers a sincere combination of laughs and relatability.Technically, Bob’s Burgers is proficient. Surprisingly, there are musical numbers that heighten the soundtrack, cinematography, editing, and direction. There is dramatic lighting, framing, and camerawork. Also, passing cuts, smash cuts, and time lapses help the comedic rhythm. Furthermore, voice acting is ranged, animation is personal, and CGI is supportive. Punchlines are heightened by exaggerated music, transitions, and surrealism. Overall, the filmmaking reinforces the humorous mood. It isn’t high art, but it possesses consistent craft. Therefore, Bob’s Burgers is a fairly enjoyable experience. Viewers should expect skilled comedy and decent emotions.

Belchers on the big screen!
I love bob’s burgers so much and this was such an amazing experience to see it brought to the movies. Very excited to be able to watch this movie over and over. I’m sure it is a movie that you catch more and more small details every time you watch it. Great extremely advanced animation illustrations, the songs were catchy and told stories through each. Got to see back stories never before seen including when Linda and Bob buy the restaurant when they are younger and the reason Louise was given and wears the hat. Lots of laughs as always and more adventure than ever, and that’s saying something.
