Highly recommended – a different take on life and death.
Thoughtfully composed and disarming cinematography. I liked the minimalist approach to dialogue while letting the images speak for themselves. The use of real people, fantastic people, especially the child actors, was critical to the message and I was reminded greatly of Brecht’s poem “Children’s Crusade”. The pace of the film slowly but steadily reaching a crescendo towards the end, with it’s final flourish and eloquent testimony to the futility of war. I would recommend this film to any Humanities teacher wanting to broaden their students experience and understanding of the real world by looking through a different telescope. This is a film that lingers on in your memory for days and weeks afterwards. Jeff Burr deserves a bigger audience.
Superb
This is a superbly haunting film that had me totally mesmerized right from the opening shot. Simply put, I love this movie. The directing is excellent – consistent, appropriate and captivating. Add to that the great photography (lots of superb shots – which again will be thanks to the director) and the spellbinding score and you get a film that has to be seen. I saw this film last night at the Fearless Tales Genre Fest in San Francisco and it blew me away. Now I just want to see it again. What I can’t understand is why I’ve not heard about this film before – it must be the World’s best kept secret! I thought the story was original and well cast – all give great performances: even the kids who totally look right, act right and are not stage school brats (and that’s got to be credit-worthy!) – or maybe they are, I don’t know, but they’re great on screen and just add to the tension and intrigue.
