But after getting greedy with a shady real estate deal, he ends up fired from a top broker firm R.E.G. by real-estate mogul Ron Glass (Burt Reynolds) and framed by Ron’s menacing, drug-addled son, Aaron. As a result, Jack ends up being the owner of a rundown apartment slum building. One year later, the disgraced Jack is approached by a mysterious power player named Frank Hunter (Rob Lowe) and his sultry wife Lana (Jessica Clark) with an offer to discreetly market and sell their Malibu villa. However, more double crosses, adultery, murder, mistaken identity, crooked deals and revenge ensue as the question is always “who is scheming, using, and double crossing who?”.

I really enjoyed this film. A smart mix of satirical dark comedy and ultra swanky neo noir, “Pocket Listing” transports you into a world of excess and wealth but then cleverly turns the table on its main character, plunging him into the depths of despair on the opposite side of the economic spectrum. The hot deal at the heart of the film is where the fun begins, but there’s also a lot of humanity and heart to this tale of a crook trying to regain his soul in a world where the only way to survive is to out-thief the thieves.

“Pocket Listing” blends different genres in roughly equal measure. Mixing in elements of neo noir with darkly comic crime caper and satirical commentary on material excess, the film manages to cleverly execute the double-blinds and double-crosses. The twists keep the audience engaged, and the cinematography and editing are crisp. More than ever though, it’s carried by a very appealing cast. James Jurdi’s character is hunky, confident, and affable, while Jessica Clark’s character is gorgeous, sexy, vulnerable, and dangerously seductive. Rob Lowe has a great turn as a rock star looking villain, and the film has solid supporting performances from Logan Donovan, Noel Gugliemi, and the great Burt Reynolds in a small but welcome role. Final Verdict: Smart and fun, sometimes tricky crime movie.

What a ride…

Expertly directed by Conor Allyn, this twisty, unpredictable, darkly comic Los Angeles fable takes you on a tour of some wonderfully amoral characters as they hustle, bustle, wheel, deal, and scheme their way through the maze of real estate.

At its core is a rise and fall morality play, but what makes the film so damn enjoyable and engaging is its sardonic, humorous edge and its bitingly satirical look at material excess and the extreme juxtaposition between the haves and the have notes.

Written with zeal and luster by confident and charismatic lead Jurdi, “Pocket Listing” is a hybrid of various genre films yet manages to maintain a smooth, even tone. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, with every player giving it their all and a little more. Watch out for drop dead beauty scene stealer Clark, who just oozes with raw talent and unbridled sexuality.

This is the kind of film that rarely gets made anymore and that doesn’t always face the best odds in today’s marketplace of bombastic blockbusters, but for my dollar, it’s as good as anything I’ve seen in a while.
