A CHANGE OF HEART
When I saw PASSIONADA the first time (it have been recommended by someone I truly admire) I was very put off. I didn’t like it, I thought it was, well, nothing. The person who had recommended it in the first place, urged me, to see two other Dan Ireland movies. The Whole Wide World, which I loved and “The Velocity Of Gary” which I thought it was hard to sit through, the first time, but, I must say, I felt compelled to see it a second time and by my third viewing I was in love with the movie. Then I went back to Passionada. What a different movie it was, within the context of Ireland’s other work. It is the perfect piece of the puzzle that unveils the total work of an artist’s life work. Ireland’s theme is LOVE, AS AN IMPOSSIBLE OBJECT. In the Whole Wide World, is intellectual and tragic in Velocity of Gary, is sexual and pathetic in Passionada, he allows the characters to have a future. It is, after all, Ireland’s romantic comedy. But even then, we don’t really know, if we listen carefully to a throw away line by Theresa Russell “Once a liar, always a liar” (Or words worth that effect) To all film fans, I suggest to see the films in order, one after the other and you’ll discover something to look forward to.
Indie spirit, Big budget feel, he ranted.
I’m not much of a reviewer. Heck, I hate reviews, and I rarely read them, and NEVER before watching the movie myself. I don’t like to know a thing about a film before I see it. I much prefer it to unfold in front of me the way the writer / director designed the thing. Although it doesn’t matter so much with most Hollywood movies nowadays, because most of them conform to the standard elements we are all accustomed to. I just don’t get Entertainment Weekly at all. Like I need a magazine to tell me what to like. Half the fun is in discovering something for yourself. But I digress.I loved this movie because it maintained its indie honesty while presenting a polished product. The acting, writing, directing, editing and cinematography are all top notch — not always true of an indie film. The characters are compelling. The soundtrack is dynamic. Yet we don’t get the big movie crap that usually goes along with high production values.
OK, go ahead and read some of the other reviews if you want to know who gets killed and who gets the girl. Seriously, see this movie because it’s a great movie, not because you already know the whole plot and you’re curious how it was implemented. And stop reading Entertainment Weekly already. I see it there in the mail stack next to you. Think for yourself!!!
