Not what I was hoping for
While great fun to see Phryne and Jack again, the movie lacked the sophistication and sparkle of the series. The action was comical, almost Miss Indiana Fisher at times. The film is gorgeous, with lush scenery and costumes, so it’s not a total waste of time, but be warned.

Familiar vibe yet thin plot, rather disappointed
I have to say if I haven’t watched the TV series before I would rate less than what I’m giving now, for sure.

Same vibe, that’s the good news. You got the same charming, witty, stylish Miss Fisher sleuthing around, just like the old times. However, the plot, it doesn’t excite me. Well, maybe for the first 15 minutes it does, but it surely doesn’t work for an 100 minutes long movie. I don’t know, maybe this is more of an action/adventure movie than a detective story, let alone mystery. Some of the plots, I don’t think they make much sense (but I don’t want to discuss it because I don’t want to contain spoilers in this review).

This film, in my own opinion, doesn’t add much to Miss Fisher’s character. I do like the feminist side of Miss Fisher (which we can all tell from the TV series), but there is a time (later parts of the movie) I felt they were overdoing it a little bit. And seriously, why is Det. Robinson in this film anyway? This series has a unique taste to other detective themed works because, Robinson actually contributes to the plot a great deal. After seeing the film, I can’t remember any part that Robinson did to help the story evolve.

Perhaps I am disappointed because I held such high expectations for this film.

Hope they will do better next time.
