> A fine Spanish countryside murder mystery.
This is a good suspense-crime-thriller. Reminded me the Korean film ‘Memories of Murder’, but not the same or similar, except the crime scenario and the location. Awesome to see a detective story that takes place outside the urban area. The Spanish countryside was so beautiful, those marshlands, especially from the aerial views.
I think the brilliant cinematography is the first thing anyone would notice and the 80s atmosphere. The narration was steady as the crime after the crime with tension arise, while on the other side the investigation advancing till the last minute to reveal the truth.
The two cops were so good, along the murder mysteries they’re working on. Beside these two men are the characters with riddles. Not only to each others, but for us as well. Not easy to predict anything, also there are some loose ends to have our own perspective regarding the story puzzle. The overall impression is its a fine mystery-crime, but still I felt that I did not enjoy entirely due to the lack of originality. Other than that I’m sure it is worth a watch.
The plot of the actual crime is not the brightest but that’s the only weak point of this movie.
The directing and photography are really, really good, with an atmosphere that remembers to the latest rising of the Scandinavian crime novels. Stieg Larsson, and series like Bron/Broen (which have been later deeply inspiring US series like “True Detective”) are very present in this movie.
The cast is superb and gives us great performances. Arévalo and Gutiérrez, which usually perform comedy roles, are fantastic, as also are Barros and Reina. The dialogs are really good and also the several loose ends that the story leaves.
To finish, the movie moves around the history of the under-dictatorship and incipient democratic Spain in an indirect way used quite often in Spanish movies. This lets the viewer the door ajar so they can be curious enough to enter and look for more information on their own, while leaving the movie in a safe spot, far from the criticism that could suffer from those in Spain still not acknowledging the darkest period of the recent history of the country.
Good thrilling movie with great performances
Set up in 1980’s two homicide detectives were sent to a remote town to investigate the disappearance of teenage sisters. During their investigation they found similar cases of girls disappearing in the past which lead them to think that they are after a serial killer.
With stellar performances from Juan (Javier Gutiérrez) and Pedro (Raúl Arévalo), beautiful locations and superb writing La Isla Minima is definitely one of the best thrilling movies of 2014. In some ways it reminds me of the True detective season 1 with long roads shots, isolated houses and dark forests.
If you are into classic thrilling movies like Se7en, Silence of the lambs, Bone collector etc. you are going to appreciate this movie so go for it.
A dark thriller for thinking people
From 1975, when Franco died; after 40 years of dictatorship, Spain moved to monarchy and in 1980 to democracy; where “La Isla Minima” takes place.
There was a huge political turmoil; nobody had any idea what was coming. People had to grow and start thinking by themselves after too many years of the government thinking for them.
Two detectives with quite different political ideas are sent to Guadalquivir ‘s marshes to investigate the disappearance (and later killing ) of two young girls. They soon realize there were more potential similar crimes. To make things worse; the locals will do little effort to help (unless paid ). There is a strike on the main factory; people are miserable, with minimal education education and no respect on authority.
Keeping a slow, almost hypnotic but never boring pace and with the help of the claustrophobic (kind of jungle environment of the marshes); Alberto Rodriguez’ movie keep us entangled and never let us go.
By the end; it is clear that is not the crimes resolution which really matters; but the picture of a society miserable, corrupt, disoriented and hopeless; just people trying to save themselves.
In such a mess; the lines of good and bad get blurred. One of the cops (a former Franco’s secret police), use torture to get information from the witness; but the movie never creates a moral dilemma on that. It seems is the only way to get something from this selfish people.
As happens in real life; some will paid for their crimes; some not and lots of things are left open. As good as the movie is; the ending will fail to satisfy those looking for a more classic thriller.
In terms of acting; Jesus Gutierrez ( a comedian)is commanding as Juan; a former torturer and hit-man for the police who will get results no matter what. He is totally believable as a cynical person with many secrets.
Raul Arevalo (also a good comedian) does a very restrained interpretation as the younger and rebel police that does not know how to manage situations. A little more character development could have helped.
In brief; a movie to enjoy and keep thinking after.
