Little Monsters is an interesting twist on the tired and overplayed zombie genre that has crowded Hollywood in recent years. How a movie about a zombie invasion threatening kids can have such humor and endearing moments is beyond me, but the film is able to deliver these in an effortless way. Lupita Nyong’o does as excellent job as a kindergarten teacher and really reminds me a lot of my own fiancé as she teaches young children, very believable. Alexander England does a fine job as well; he really plays off from his nephew (Diesel La Torraca) and Nyong’o very well. The pair have good chemistry that builds throughout the film and pays off at the end. Josh Gad is very much what you would expect from him, over the top and annoying. I found his character to take away from a lot of scenes, but it didn’t hurt the overall experience too much, just wish they toned him down a bit. The comedy is reminiscent of Kindergarten Cop, some of the humor and jokes hit while others missed entirely. I did really enjoy the constant songs and kid controlling mechanisms that they used throughout the film. It added a subtle spice of dark humor with the backdrop of zombies trying to devour the students. This film doesn’t do a lot but what it attempts to do, it does fairly well.

**Verdict:** _Good_

_Little Monsters_ was pretty good, but there’s one glaring issue I found with it. The funniest bits in the movie (which for a comedy basically reads as: “best”) all happen **before** there’s any actual zombies. The establishing of characterisation in the first twenty minutes was more enjoyable than anything that came in the actual “plot”. But to say that the opening of a movie was great and the rest of it, merely good, is about the least scathing of a criticism that you can give a movie, so _Little Monsters_ still comes away with a recommendation.

It’s really good… but also awful
By the end of the film you love it and feel good about it but that’s only if you survive the first third of it. The beginning (aside from the opening credits which are very humorous) is painful and crude and plain awful; not in film or acting but content wise. However that does depend on personal taste and humor.

It really comes together in the final act and a solid ending that is happy, tender and sweet which is unheard of with a zombie flick.

Pure budget zom-Com gold
A teacher and a “man-child” get caught in a zombie outbreak with a bus load of kids.

First off this is quite a “small” movie: it only concerns a handful of characters and at no point is society on the brink of collapse or the White-house explodes.

Also this is a Zom-Com with a lowercase “z”. You do not get your first zombie until about half way through and then they are there for plot device rather than menace.

This film is lots of fun! It starts of as a dry, amusing rom-com about a guy splitting up with his long-term girlfriend and his sudden infatuation with his nephew’s kindergarten teacher. Then there is some zombie silliness.

The film happily pokes fun at itself and never tries to take itself seriously. A lot of the humor comes from how adults are expected to behave around children; this setting leads to some interesting situations. Expect lots of naughty-word gags and vagina jokes!

It is clear a lot of love was poured into this film. Small things, that can be so easily neglected, like extra costume and direction are afforded great care. This permeates through the whole production.

The acting is top notch and watching Ms Nyong’o flit around the zombie infested countryside in her sunburst yellow dress I am sure will become an iconic scene.

This is not a big blockbuster movie and is unlikely to shatter anyone’s Earth: but it is a fairly simple, cheerful movie that anyone can enjoy with a bag of popcorn and a grin.

P.S My girlfriend hates anything zombie related but admitted this was “actually pretty good” which screams volumes.
