Watch: Imitation of Life 1959 123movies, Full Movie Online – Aspiring actress Lora Meredith meets Annie Johnson, a homeless Black woman at Coney Island, and soon they share a tiny apartment. Each woman has an intolerable daughter. However, Annie’s little girl Sarah Jane is by far the worst. Neurotic and obnoxious, Sarah Jane doesn’t like being Black; since she’s light-skinned (her father was practically white), she spends the rest of the film trying to pass as white, much to her mother’s heartache and shame. Lora, meanwhile, virtually ignores her own daughter in a single-minded quest for stardom..
Plot: Lora Meredith, a white widow who dreams of being on Broadway, has a chance encounter with Annie Johnson, a black single mother. Annie becomes the caretaker of Lora’s daughter, Susie, while Lora pursues her stage career. Both women deal with the difficulties of motherhood: Lora’s thirst for fame threatens her relationship with Susie, while Annie’s light-skinned daughter, Sarah Jane, struggles with her African-American identity.

fascinating look at a mostly unknown phenomenon
I have seen this movie many times and only just found out that it is a remake of a 1934 Claudette Colbert film. I find the topic fascinating as I am a member of a family with many very fair-skinned black people and my grandmother often spoke of cousins who “passed” that she never saw or heard from again. It is so sad that people couldn’t just be who they are and be OK with it. On the other hand, it is a testament as to the whole idea of race and just how skin deep it truly is. This movie should also make everyone look at people a little differently. No one knows just who we all are or where we come from and what commonalities we all share. I love this film and like other viewers, it makes me cry every time too. This is a classic.
