Nothing ever really dies in the corn
Ever since Stephen King started to publish his novels in the 70s they had been adapted to the big screen. While some of them are successful (Carrie, Misery, The Shining, IT) and even considered classic horror films a few of them doesn’t have the same response (FireStarter, Graveyard Shift). In 1984 the first adaptation of King’s short story Children of the Corn was released and while that version wasn’t well received at the time, today it can be considered the best entry of this failed franchise. Every entry in the franchise is worst than the other making the original look as a good 80s horror movie.
This new remake, that also feels like a prequel, spend three years waiting for been released and it should have been stayed like that. Sometimes bad horror films can still be liked by the audience by their entertaining story, silly dialogues, and decent gore. But not even that happens here as the only salvageable thing about this movie is Kate Moyers’ performance as the kid’s leader Eden Edwards. But, that’s not enough to save this film from being an unjustified addition to the franchise. The worst part of this film can be the CGI and portrayal of “He Who Walks” that resembles Marvel character Groot but with corn. This new version only proves that this story and franchise has no salvation and should be forgotten.
The Red Queen
The film opens with an incident and killing of people at an orphanage in Nebraska farmland town of Rylstone. Eden (Kate Moyer) is the sole survivor and is taken in by the creepy looking Pastor Penny (Bruce Spence). We move to years later as Eden has become a leader among the children. Bo (Elena Kampouris) is set to leave town to go to Boston University and study microbiology. The corn has developed a fungus and Bo gives us a two second history of ergot effects and flammability of corn. The corn is the product of GMOs and chemical fertilizers. Pastor Penny blames the moral decay of the town for the decay of the corn. Bo’s father (Callan Mulvey) leads the charge to destroy the corn and get government subsidies for not growing corn. With the death of the precious cornfield imminent, the children do whatever it takes to save the crop.
The film is not bad as long as you try to forget the original. The cult aspect is far less in this one and not as creepy. Kate Moyer started her young career in the film “It” and has been in the “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Boleyn Williams does not look like her classy self from being the star in the title role for “Wifelike.” I didn’t like the extra postscript on the ending. I think they should have left it at the dark fade away and clipped it.
Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.
