Synopsis

Watch: Born in a Ballroom 2019 123movies, Full Movie Online – “Born in a Ballroom,” explores the relationship between the Hütte Restaurant, its founder, Eleanor Mailloux, and the rural Appalachian village she called home, Helvetia, West Virginia. The night of Eleanor’s birth on March 29, 1917, the small log cabin her parents owned caught fire. Her mother ran to the plantation home nearby to give birth to little Eleanor on the ballroom floor. Entering this world with gusto, Eleanor often lamented, “I was born in a ballroom, and I’ve been dancing ever since.”Eleanor went on to teach, work for the Red Cross, travel the world, raise a family of five, and co-found The Hütte Restaurant in her rural hometown of Helvetia, WV. The Hütte is a Swiss restaurant that is nationally acclaimed both in print and in television (see The Hütte featured on Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern”). The Hütte reflects Eleanor and Helvetia’s heritage through its food, decor, and culture. As we explore this exceptional woman and place, we discover, now forty years later, how one woman embraced a community through food and perhaps a dance or two.Eleanor passed away on March 9, 2011 just twenty days shy of her 94th birthday. Even though the filmmakers cannot directly interview Eleanor for this film, they have collected old interviews and news footage to fill that void. Furthermore, The Hütte, Helvetia, and Eleanor’s family and friends confidently and seamlessly convey her story. Generally, the film follows The Hütte’s story through the seasons while weaving Eleanor’s voice and image throughout..

A Film Documentary That Is a Captivating and Moving Tribute!
I’ve eagerly anticipated Born In A Ballroom since watching the trailer. I wasn’t disappointed…I was transported. This gem of a documentary by #coatofarms is a celebration, a symphony of dear people whose great conductor was Eleanor Fahrner Mailloux, a woman possessed with enough energy and passion as to leave a legacy worthy of preservation.

A line from one of my favorite songs is, “We all want to belong to something more than ourselves.” This line resonates with me something fierce. Helvetia is a tiny rural community, but there is nothing small about her people, her energy, the open arms you cannot see but feel welcoming you home. The first time I went to Helvetia I remember feeling that I finally found that ‘something’ that was bigger than me, that ‘something’ I wanted to belong to. That ‘something’ is the possession Eleanor Mailloux speaks of. It’s difficult to find words to do the feelings justice. Go. Take it in. Let Helvetia wash over you and fill up your soul.

Jack Gibbons ‘Solace’ was haunting, said more than words ever could and brought tears, joyous tears at the pleasure of hearing such beauty.

Born In A Ballroom was masterfully directed, a beautiful tribute that was captured at every angle by the one behind the camera. The lighting, the music, the tender moments…thank you Clara Lehmann and Jonathan Lacocque for sharing this magic with the world.

More Honesty Than Many Biographical Shows
Nice to see a show that allowed its interviewees to speak their minds about the subject of the piece. So many times I have done more reading or a quick search and found evidence of censorship, whereas with “Born in a Ballroom” Eleanor Mailloux was portrayed as a real, complex person; not sanitized in the edit.

“Born in a Ballroom” also makes me want to visit Helvetia, a four-hour drive from where I live in Harpers Ferry, WV. Maybe in the spring … after the vaccine takes hold.

Hopefully many will see this doc and balance out the images from “Hillbilly Elegy.” Let’s hope, anyway.
