“Bones and All holds committed, chemistry-filled performances from Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet, telling a complex, interpretive story about true love and what we really need to survive.

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross’ score shines and is the work’s greatest chance of receiving an Oscar nomination, taking into account the shocking approach to cannibalism – it partially affects the connection with the protagonists – and horror aspects.

A thought-provoking screenplay by David Kajganich and unrestrained direction by Luca Guadagnino elevate a film that deserves to be seen – and felt – on the big screen.”

“Maren” (Taylor Russell) sneaks out of her home to visit her girlfriends one night only for one of them to discover that she has a peculiar appetite – and I’m not talking sexually! Forced to flee with her father, who subsequently abandons her, she decides to try to track down her mother. A few bus journies later, she encounters the enigmatic “Sully” (Sir Mark Rylance) with whom she shares a snack and from whom she discovers a little more about her nature. Still, he makes her very nervous so she continues her journey alone where next she encounters “Lee” (Timothée Chalamet) after an altercation in a grocery store. He also has the same nourishment predilections and so the two start to bond. He helps her with her familial quest before an unexpected visitor throws quite a spanner in their plan. At times this is little better than a derivative road movie. The characterisations are all just a bit too contrived, and the narrative is hardly original – but, that said, there is a quirkily spooky performance from Sir Mark – who looks like he would not be out of place half way up an Alp and Russell offers a reasonable effort as the conflicted and confused young woman trying to reconcile her innate desires with her aspirations as a woman. Chalamet presents us with one of his more natural and charismatic performances here, even if – shirtless for much of it as he is – he still makes me want to force feed him a bowl of fries (indeed the title could have been applied just to him!) Lots of dialogue, too much really, but the story has layers of complexity to it surrounding issues of identity and purpose – especially amongst the American young, some fine photography and it plays the accruing sense of affection between the youngsters without cringing sentimentality before an ending that seemed a little unnecessarily brutal. I suspect this may get better with another viewing.

Horror meets poetry
Before I start this review, I have to admit I have a soft spot for Luca Guadagnino and his directing style, which really speaks to me on an emotional level.

The movie is not perfect, but I enjoyed watching it, as to me this mixture of gory horror and on the road romance is quite new.

The plot is quite thin and the pace of the movie is slow and indefinite, but to me this is not negative: in the two hours of screentime I was never bored, and I sort of felt like I was on the road along with the protagonists.

The lead actors were really good, and in my opinion this was one of the best performances by Timothée Chalamet, whose chemistry with Guadagnino is undeniable. I think he was particularly suited for this role, because his innocent face and body perfectly communicated the nature of his character, conflicted between his monstrous instincts and his good heart.

The best performance was anyway delivered by Mark Rylance, whose creepy character Sully was great for keeping the tension high throughout the whole movie.

I really loved the poetic atmospheres of the road trip scenes, so typical of Guadagnino.

The negative aspects that can’t be denied are the poor development of the characters, which makes it hard to root for them, and the quality of the dialogues, which are often shallow.

Personally I didn’t appreciate the ending scene and the related dialogue especially.

Despite some negative specs, I would absolutely suggest seeing it, if you don’t mind some pretty gory scenes.

Blood and gore porn
I’ve always liked Luca Guadagnino’s films, although I didn’t see his previous film Suspiria. Mostly because I’m not a fan of extreme horror.

I went to a BAFTA screening of Bones and All, invited by a friend. She said that it was a ‘vegan love story’ according to the book on which the screenplay is based. I thought ‘oh this sounds a bit boring but Luca and Timothee will make it worthwhile’.

Barely 20 minutes in the lead female character bites off her friend’s finger at a teen sleepover, and I realized this wasn’t a vegan love story.

From then on it just gets worse, more and more creepy and explicit in its cannibalism. The lovers on the run/ troubled teens is just an aside.

No explanation is given as to how the cannibalism passes on through generations, and because it is not an established mythology such as vampires or werewolves it falls flat, and that’s the least of its problems.

The only time when a character seems willing to explore its own arc is thrown away (Taylor says ‘so this is my life now? 60 years of this?’) and the film feasts on itself, so to speak.

I found this film truly horrible and disturbing, especially as it tries to turn cannibals and murderers into victims. Be warned, it is very graphic.

At the screening I attended there was a Q&A afterward, in which Guadagnino made a parallel between the film ‘Maurice’ (by James Ivory, who also worte Call Me By Your Name) and ‘Bones and All’, because the gay character Maurice says “a leopard can’t change its spots” and this would apply to the cannibals as well. I don’t think Guadagnino or the interviewer realized how horrible it was to compare cannibals to gay people, but in a way it summed up how clueless the filmmakers were on this specific project.

I gave it 5 start because it is a well made, well shot and well acted film.
