Mad Men on Acid
What a strange one this is. The movie strays pretty far from the book, and plays like the weirdest episode of Mad Men never filmed. The tone is unrelentingly dour, and the point is… what? Stuttering leads to radicalization? Don’t have a mixed marriage? The 60s were a bitch? It’s well done, and the filmmakers’ hearts were in the right place but David Strathairn as the Philip Roth character and Ewan McGregor as a Jewish guy? Nope.

Trouble in Paradise
In the bonus segment of the DVD version of “American Pastoral,” it was revealed that this film project was in the works for over a decade. There was clearly a genuine passion from the film artists in bringing to the screen Philip Roth’s allegorical novel, the most famous part of his so-called American Trilogy.

Ewan McGregor stars as the protagonist Seymour “Swede” Levov, a star athlete in high school, a Marine, and a hard-working entrepreneur in the glove-making business in Newark, New Jersey. The film sets up his idyllic life as the American Dream, especially after he marries a beauty queen and becomes the father of a beautiful daughter.

But the dream collapses when the daughter becomes a rebellious teenager involved in multiple bombings that take four human lives. The significance of the setting in the 1960s and the backdrop of the Vietnam War is essential to the film’s meaning. In this context, the film is a parable about the fall from grace of American idealism, the shattered illusions that resulted from one of the most violent decades in our history.

Along with his excellent performance, Ewan McGregor’s work as director was exemplary with brilliant set-ups and cinematography. There was good feeling from the excellent cast, including David Straithairn as the autobiographical narrator.

SPOILER ALERT: For the film viewer who wants to probe into the psychological details of the film, keep an eye out for one moment related to the young daughter’s pattern of stuttering. The moment occurs in a car, and the individual doing the stuttering is the dad, not the daughter. That’s right…the great Swede Levov was a stutterer himself!
