Henry Graham, formerly known as a rich millionaire has now ran out of money.So all he has to do now is marry a rich dame and then kill her.This unlucky woman is Henrietta Lowell, a nerdy botanist who dreams of discovering a new species of tree fern.She’s awfully clumsy and shy.She falls for this heartless man and we, the viewers fall for Henrietta but Henry certainly doesn’t fall for her.A New Leaf (1971) is a different kind of romantic comedy.It has very little of romance and very much of comedy.Elaine May is not only the player of the leading lady, she’s also the director and writer.As Henrietta she’s one of the kind with her heavens and all.It’s impossible to hate her.And, despite his flaws, it’s also impossible to hate Henry Graham, played by Walter Matthau.Maybe it’s Matthau’s ability to make this character so likable, even though he’s somewhat homicidal.What a fine comedian he was.There are many other fine talents in the movie.George Rose plays Harold the butler.James Coco is Uncle Harry.Doris Roberts (Raymond’s mother) plays Mrs. Traggert.Renée Taylor (Nanny’s mother) plays Sally Hart.The movie is filled with funny stuff.Watching those two camping and canoing is delightful.It contains many funny and witty lines.At one point there’s this party that’s been attended by a couple that happens to have Hitler as their surname.Henry asks them: Excuse me, you’re not by any chance related to the Boston Hitlers.Hilarious! The film was well received by critics back then.Roger Ebert gave it a top rating of four stars.But still it did poorly at the box office and remains little known by the general public.After seeing this movie I can only ask why.Even I couldn’t recall hearing of this movie.But thank heavens it was shown on TV and now I’m a little wiser.Now I’m aware something as funny and witty as this exists.
