As bland as the predecessor…
Well, the 2012 Thai horror anthology “3 A.M.” wasn’t exactly an extraordinary horror experience, so it was with little hopes for the 2014 sequel “3 A.M. 2” (aka “Ti sam khuen sam 3D”) that I sat down to watch this in 2021.And I will say that this sequel was about as enjoyable as the 2012 movie, so if you enjoyed that, then you will enjoy this 2014 sequel too. I wasn’t much of a fan of the first movie, and found in to be mediocre, and this 2014 anthology didn’t really up the game.
The three stories told in this anthology were definitely of very different qualities. The first segment, titled “The Third Night” was the least interesting of all the three segments, and it was a shame that they opted for that one as the first one, because it sort of put a dampener on the rest of the segments. The second segment, titled “The Convent”, definitely had the most commercial appeal in terms of contents and value. While the third segment, titled “The Offering” may not be the most riveting of stories, it was actually the one that offered the most in terms of giving the audience something to think about.
I’ve seen my share of Asian horror anthologies, and “3 A.M. 2” is definitely not a contender to be among the top rated. Sure, the anthology was watchable, but it wasn’t a particularly memorable or outstanding experience.
My rating of the 2014 anthology lands on a very bland and mediocre five out of ten stars. If you enjoy Asian horror, then there are far better choices readily available.
